  • Rhythm of Chongqing: A closer look at China's 'Capital of Fog'

Chongqing is one of five municipalities directly under the administration of China's central government. It’s in the southwest of the country, nestled within a circle of rocky ridges, at the confluence of two rivers. A thick fog constantly hangs over the city, giving Chongqing its unofficial title, the "Capital of Fog". The city is also called Shancheng, meaning "City in the Mountains". The jewel of Chongqing, and one of its newest landmarks, is the light railway. It fits perfectly into the complex city and mountain landscape. Another symbol of Chongqing is the famous Chinese hot-pot, which is very hot and spicy. It was originally designed to help boatmen endure freezing winter temperatures. Chongqing today is an important way-point in the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative....

Layers of old are being buried under new in Chongqing, China. The city has gone from being a fairly large city in Sichuan, to a municipality and one of China's four National Core cities. There's a lot of change happening. Construction can be seen everywhere. We only spent a brief amount of time in Chongqing, but I have a feeling when we go back it will be a little different. Maybe one of the large waterfront projects will be finished. Maybe a new skyscraper will be dominating the skyline. One thing will not change though: the spicy broth that dominates Chongqing's food scene. Hotpot in Chongqing is as much of a challenge as it is a meal. Pieces of meat and vegetables are placed in the broth and cooked, absorbing the deadly chili broth. I'd call it a must-try in Chongqing, but if you don't...

The London Blitz of WWII is famous - but the people of another city, half a world away from England, also suffered the relentless horror of terror bombing. The city of Chongqing became the Nationalist capital of China after the Japanese Imperial Army over-ran and occupied the east of the country in 1938. Chongqing was crowded with refugees, as well as local people; and from 1938 to 1943 Japan carried out hundreds of sorties on the city, killing thousands and reducing much of the city to smoking ruins. Gao Rongbing was a local boy, a teenager, who had volunteered as part of the city’s protection group – and one of his jobs was to spot and note down the dates, times and locations of bombs dropped on the city. But one day he was called upon to do something much more shocking. Thousands of people had got stuck inside an air-raid shelter for a whole day. Unable to push open the door, approximately 4,000 suffocated. The memory of the three days it took him and other volunteers to clear the shelter of the dead has stayed with him his whole life. The municipality was created on 14 March 1997, succeeding the sub-provincial city administration that was part of Sichuan Province. It has jurisdiction over 19 districts, 17 counties, and four autonomous counties, and much of its administrative area, which spans over 80,000 square kilometres (30,900 sq mi), is rural. The municipal abbreviation, Yú (渝), was approved by the State Council on 18 April 1997. Chengdu capital of Sichuan province China Chengdu formerly romanized as Chengtu, is a sub-provincial city which has served as the capital of China's Sichuan province since the elevation of Chongqing to provincial status in 1997. It is one of the six national central cities of China, as well as a major city in Western China. As of 2014 the administrative area houses 14,427,500 inhabitants, with an urban population of 10,152,632. At the time of the 2010 census, Chengdu was the 5th-most populous agglomeration in China, with 10,484,996 inhabitants in the built-up area including Xinjin County and Deyang's Guanghan City. The surrounding Chengdu Plain is also known as the "Country of Heaven" (Chinese: 天府之国; pinyin: Tiānfǔ zhi Guó) and the "Land of Abundance". Its prehistoric settlers included the Sanxingdui culture. Founded by the state of Shu prior to its incorporation into China, Chengdu is unique as a major Chinese settlement that has maintained its name (nearly) unchanged throughout the imperial, republican, and communist eras. It was the capital of Liu Bei's Shu during the Three Kingdoms Era, as well as several other local kingdoms during the Middle Ages. After the fall of Nanjing to the Japanese in 1937, Chengdu briefly served as the capital of China. It is now one of the most important economic, financial, commercial, cultural, transportation, and communication centers in Western China. Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is one of the 30 busiest airports in the world, and Chengdu Railway Station is one of the six biggest in China. Chengdu also hosts many international companies and more than 12 consulates. More than 260 Fortune 500 companies have established branches in Chengdu. In 2006, China Daily named it China's 4th-most-livable city. Sichuan, formerly romanized as Szechwan, is a province in southwest China occupying most of the Sichuan Basin between the Himalayas on the west, the Daba in the north, and the Yungui Plateau to the east. Following Chongqing's elevation to provincial status, Sichuan's capital became Chengdu. In antiquity, Sichuan was the home of the ancient states of Ba and Shu. Their conquest by Qin strengthened it and paved the way for the First Emperor's unification of China under the Qin Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms era, Liu Bei's Shu was based in Sichuan. The area was devastated in the 17th century by Zhang Xianzhong's rebellion and the area's subsequent Manchu conquest, but recovered to become one of China's most productive areas by the 19th century. During the Second World War, Chongqing served as the temporary capital of the Republic of China, making it the focus of Japanese bombing. It was one of the last mainland areas to fall to the Communists during the Chinese Civil War and was divided into four parts from 1949 to 1952, with Chongqing restored two years later. It suffered gravely during the Great Chinese Famine of 1959–61 but remained China's most populous province until Chongqing Municipality was again separated from it in 1997. The people of Sichuan speak a unique form of Mandarin, which took shape during the area's repopulation under the Ming. The family of dialects is now spoken by about 120 million people, which would make it the 10th most spoken language in the world if counted separately. The area's warm damp climate long caused Chinese medicine to advocate spicy dishes; the native Sichuan pepper was supplemented by Mexican chilis during the Columbian Exchange to form modern Sichuan cuisine, whose dishes—including Kung Pao chicken and Mapo tofu—have become staples around the world. chengdu china points of interest, chengdu china weather, chengdu restaurant, chengdu research base of giant panda breeding, chengdu hotels, chengdu airport, chengdu population, chengdu flights, sichuan sauce, sichuan food, sichuan chengdu, sichuan china earthquake, sichuan pronunciation, sichuan chicken, sichuan province map, sichuan style,
