• Rhythm of Chongqing: A closer look at China's 'Capital of Fog'

Chongqing is one of five municipalities directly under the administration of China's central government. It’s in the southwest of the country, nestled within a circle of rocky ridges, at the confluence of two rivers. A thick fog constantly hangs over the city, giving Chongqing its unofficial title, the "Capital of Fog". The city is also called Shancheng, meaning "City in the Mountains". The jewel of Chongqing, and one of its newest landmarks, is the light railway. It fits perfectly into the complex city and mountain landscape. Another symbol of Chongqing is the famous Chinese hot-pot, which is very hot and spicy. It was originally designed to help boatmen endure freezing winter temperatures. Chongqing today is an important way-point in the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative....

The 9,164-meter Xinchengzi tunnel is part of the railway line connecting the province's capital of Lanzhou with Chongqing Municipality in southwest China. The complex geological structure on the northeast edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau where the tunnel stands make the excavation work extremely difficult, according to the tunnel’s contractor, China Railway 11th Group Co., Ltd. Its obscurity may be because until recently it was no more than a village: its rapid growth began in WWII, when it became the temporary capital of China; and it was only in 1997 that the city merged with neighbouring prefectures to become a major metropolis. Despite not yet enjoying the global recognition that it deserves, the city welcomes hundreds of millions of local and foreign tourists every year. Among its main attractions is an intricate monorail road that winds through the mountains and urban landscape offering a stunning view of the city. Chengdu capital of Sichuan province China Chengdu formerly romanized as Chengtu, is a sub-provincial city which has served as the capital of China's Sichuan province since the elevation of Chongqing to provincial status in 1997. It is one of the six national central cities of China, as well as a major city in Western China. As of 2014 the administrative area houses 14,427,500 inhabitants, with an urban population of 10,152,632. At the time of the 2010 census, Chengdu was the 5th-most populous agglomeration in China, with 10,484,996 inhabitants in the built-up area including Xinjin County and Deyang's Guanghan City. The surrounding Chengdu Plain is also known as the "Country of Heaven" (Chinese: 天府之国; pinyin: Tiānfǔ zhi Guó) and the "Land of Abundance". Its prehistoric settlers included the Sanxingdui culture. Founded by the state of Shu prior to its incorporation into China, Chengdu is unique as a major Chinese settlement that has maintained its name (nearly) unchanged throughout the imperial, republican, and communist eras. It was the capital of Liu Bei's Shu during the Three Kingdoms Era, as well as several other local kingdoms during the Middle Ages. After the fall of Nanjing to the Japanese in 1937, Chengdu briefly served as the capital of China. It is now one of the most important economic, financial, commercial, cultural, transportation, and communication centers in Western China. Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is one of the 30 busiest airports in the world, and Chengdu Railway Station is one of the six biggest in China. Chengdu also hosts many international companies and more than 12 consulates. More than 260 Fortune 500 companies have established branches in Chengdu. In 2006, China Daily named it China's 4th-most-livable city. Sichuan, formerly romanized as Szechwan, is a province in southwest China occupying most of the Sichuan Basin between the Himalayas on the west, the Daba in the north, and the Yungui Plateau to the east. Following Chongqing's elevation to provincial status, Sichuan's capital became Chengdu. In antiquity, Sichuan was the home of the ancient states of Ba and Shu. Their conquest by Qin strengthened it and paved the way for the First Emperor's unification of China under the Qin Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms era, Liu Bei's Shu was based in Sichuan. The area was devastated in the 17th century by Zhang Xianzhong's rebellion and the area's subsequent Manchu conquest, but recovered to become one of China's most productive areas by the 19th century. During the Second World War, Chongqing served as the temporary capital of the Republic of China, making it the focus of Japanese bombing. It was one of the last mainland areas to fall to the Communists during the Chinese Civil War and was divided into four parts from 1949 to 1952, with Chongqing restored two years later. It suffered gravely during the Great Chinese Famine of 1959–61 but remained China's most populous province until Chongqing Municipality was again separated from it in 1997. The people of Sichuan speak a unique form of Mandarin, which took shape during the area's repopulation under the Ming. The family of dialects is now spoken by about 120 million people, which would make it the 10th most spoken language in the world if counted separately. The area's warm damp climate long caused Chinese medicine to advocate spicy dishes; the native Sichuan pepper was supplemented by Mexican chilis during the Columbian Exchange to form modern Sichuan cuisine, whose dishes—including Kung Pao chicken and Mapo tofu—have become staples around the world. chengdu china points of interest, chengdu china weather, chengdu restaurant, chengdu research base of giant panda breeding, chengdu hotels, chengdu airport, chengdu population, chengdu flights, sichuan sauce, sichuan food, sichuan chengdu, sichuan china earthquake, sichuan pronunciation, sichuan chicken, sichuan province map, sichuan style,

A railway tunnel with the largest cross sectional area in China was completed Tuesday in the country’s northwest Gansu Province after more than seven years of construction. Its maximum cross sectional area is 350 square meters, or 2.5 times the size of common railway tunnels, making it the largest ever constructed in China. The completion of the tunnel will greatly facilitate the operation of the Lanzhou-Chongqing railway line stretching 915 kilometers, said the contractor. http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com It's always something. Beijing Capital Airport is working on its runways and we sat on the plane for a one hour hold. Not only that, flight attendants began serving meals when we finally began to taxi, gave passengers around 1-1/2 minutes to gulp down and whisked the trays away! Just when you think you've seen everything....

Chongqing (Chinese: 重庆; pinyin: chóngqìng), formerly transliterated as Chungking, is a major city in Southwest China and one of the Five national central cities in China. Administratively, it is one of China's four direct-controlled municipalities (the other three are BeijingShanghai and Tianjin), and the only such municipality in inland China. The municipality was created on 14 March 1997, succeeding the sub-provincial city administration that was part of Sichuan Province. Chongqing's population as of 2015 is just over 30 million with an urban population of 18.38 million. Of these, approximately 8.5 million people live in Chongqing city proper; Fuling DistrictWanzhou Districtand Qianjiang District are in fact cities in their own right, and along with the city proper constitute a group urban. According to the 2010 census, Chongqing is the most populous Chinese municipality, and also the largest direct-controlled municipality in China, and comprises 24 districts, 10 counties, and 4 autonomous counties. The official abbreviation of the city, Yu (渝), was approved by the State Councilon 18 April 1997. This abbreviation is derived from the old name of a part of the Jialing River that runs through Chongqing and feeds into the Yangtze River. Chongqing was also a municipality of the Republic of China (ROC) administration, serving as its wartime capital during the Second Sino-Japanese War (19371945). Chongqing has a significant history and culture and serves as the economic centre of the upstream Yangtze basin. It is a major manufacturing centre and transportation hub; a July 2012 report by the Economist Intelligence Unitdescribed it as one of China's "13 emerging megacities".

The city of Chongqing is the largest in China and, according to some estimates, the world. Its total area equates to the whole of Austria and it has a population of around 32 million. Another of Chongqing’s signature experiences is the famous Chinese hot-pot that was invented in the city. Hot and spicy, with a generous dose of locally grown chili pepper, it was originally designed to help boatmen endure freezing winter temperatures. Today, Chinese hot-pot is a popular dish throughout the country but still a ‘must-try’ in its city of origin. The people of Chongqing take pride in their history, architecture and status as a major metropolis. RTD meets some of the citizens who contribute to Chongqing’s development and continue its heritage.
